The Indian government has recently blocked 14 mobile messaging applications that were found to pose a security threat. These apps were used by terror groups, primarily in the Jammu and Kashmir area, to communicate with their supporters and overground workers . The banned apps include Crypviser, Enigma, Safeswiss, Wickrme, Mediafire, Briar, BChat, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Element, Second Line, Zangi, and Threema.
Reason of ban :
These apps were identified as tools used for terror propaganda, and as they lack Indian representation, it was deemed difficult to track their activities within the country. This move by the Indian government is aimed at cracking down on terrorist activities and ensuring national security .
Histoy of banned apps
This is not the first time that the Indian government has taken such action. In the last few years, the government has imposed bans on over 250 Chinese apps citing them to be “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India” . The banned Chinese apps include popular platforms such as TikTok, Shareit, WeChat, Helo, and PUBG Mobile.
The Indian government's decision to ban these apps has been met with mixed reactions. While some people believe that this move is necessary for national security, others argue that it infringes on the right to free speech and access to information. Whatever the case may be, it is clear that the Indian government is taking strong measures to protect its citizens and ensure the country's security.
