IP RATINGS : KNOW WHAT 'IPXX' SIGNIFIES

When it comes to choosing electronics or appliances, one of the most important things to consider is how well they can withstand different environmental conditions. That’s where IP ratings come into play. This  standard was developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and is recognized all over the world.

An IP rating is a shorthand way of describing how well a device can resist dust, dirt, water, and other particles. IP stands for “Ingress Protection” and it’s used to help consumers make informed decisions about which products will best suit their needs.

IP ratings typically consist of two numbers. The first number represents the device’s level of protection against solid particles, while the second number represents its level of protection against liquid ingress.

If in any rating there is 'X' written in any place then the product was not able to pass that protection test.

Sometimes, there might be a letter at the end of the code IPXX. This is the supplementary letter, and it can be used to denote the supplementary information from the product standard

Please check out the chart below for more information:

Let’s break it down further.

Solid Particle Protection

The first number in an IP rating indicates how well a device can resist solid particles. This rating ranges from 0 to 6, with each number representing a different level of protection. Here’s what each rating means:

0 – No protection against solid particles

1 – Protection against solid particles larger than 50mm

2 – Protection against solid particles larger than 12.5mm

3 – Protection against solid particles larger than 2.5mm

4 – Protection against solid particles larger than 1mm

5 – Dust-protected (limited ingress of dust, no harmful deposits)

6 – Dust-tight (complete protection against dust)

Liquid Ingress Protection

The second number in an IP rating indicates how well a device can resist liquid ingress. This rating ranges from 0 to 9, with each number representing a different level of protection. Here’s what each rating means:

0 – No protection against liquid ingress

1 – Protection against vertically falling drops of water

2 – Protection against vertically falling drops of water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15 degrees from its normal position

3 – Protection against spraying water

4 – Protection against splashing water

5 – Protection against water jets

6 – Protection against powerful water jets

7 – Protection against temporary immersion in water (up to 1 meter)

8 – Protection against continuous immersion in water (beyond 1 meter)

9 – Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets
